Artist's Comments

Since the Mecha-Gryphon was the first model I actually built from a complete stick-figure skeleton, I ended up with a lot of in-progress images of the model before I finally completed it. So I figure, why not share a record of how this model came into being from start to finish?

Should be more comments than this.
Thats one thing that 3d artists need, is more communication. At least traditional artists hang out or go to workshops. Here at DA unless you are part of a club, its very hard to see this kind of stuff.
DA is not CgSociety and there are no 3d people here at DA?

Kudos to you for doing this.

What were your influences for designing this model?

An excellent reminder of the journey behind every 3D model. And one darn sweet Gryphon!

I've also started using stick-figures and mannequins to start me off these days, though I tend to joint my DoGAs a little earlier (probably somewhere between your step six and step seven). I find that the less parts I have on my model, the easier it is to select the ones you want. On the other hand, when i decide to re-build parts like you did here, things can get a bit messy.
Well, I guess a big part of the design influence was Zoids, even though I've only seen a few episodes of that anime. Most of my reference was artwork by ~whitegryphon since this model was used in a giftart for that artist. And I think some of the influence had to come from the Megaman X series (Games 1-6 mostly, with the bulkier reploid designs.)

Anyhow, thanks for the comment! ^_^

Heh, I guess I've just got a really good sense of how the model will move, so I can usually get away with saving the jointing for last. That and I'm stupidly patient when it comes to breaking the model down for jointing :D

Thank you for taking the time to discuss this.

Too bad they don't spend more time on this kind of stuff than the other stuff they post in the 3d forum.

I wouldn't know ^^; I generally avoid the forums unless somebody points me at a specific post.

Good advice, I should follow it.

Been cruising the Traditional Art forum too many times looking for people crying and screaming that "Traditional art is dying", "Traditional artists will be hunted and killed so get that painting/drawing done","Digital artists broke in and smashed my easel to bits and replaced it with a computer *pouts and cries*". Well, maybe the second and third ones are not quite true but you get the idea.

Got this gnarled hand from the Bryce vs the World flamewars of 2006, well its not really my hand, I found it on the ground.

Note to self: More time making stuff and less time typing, unless its code.

Heh, I suspect I'm quite glad I missed that flamewar! :D Granted, there's probably some 3-D artists out there that get all elitist on hobbyist programs like DoGA, too.

Man, I hate elitists.
