You know, I can't believe I haven't got a single image of this beast up on my gallery already. Anyway, onto the long-winded commentary.
This costume project ate up all of my free time and weekends between January and July 2005. Not to mention all my spare cash as well. While working on the construction of this costume, neither my friend Master Zero (the person actually wearing it), or I had any social life whatsoever outside of the "Gundam Hangar" (the garage.)
This costume debuted at Anime Expo 2005 Masquerade Contest. Unfortunately, we didn't win anything at AX. The costume was later entered at Ani-Magic and Pacific Media Expo the same year, and it did earn an honorable mention at the latter event.
You can find additional pictures of this costume in Master Zero's Cosplay.com gallery, and I'm pretty sure any online convention galleries will have their own pictures from the 4th day of AX2005.
You can see our progress pictures here. At its core, the armor is mounted on a framework I welded out of thin steel rod. The majority of the armor itself was created from foam board and covered with a heat-adhesive shrink wrap usually used on model aircraft frames to give it that shiny plastic look. The feet are 7 inch high platforms built from 2x4s and put the wearer's feet actually in the mobile suit's ankles. The head section was built from a racing helmet that was heavily modified.
We never actually kept track of how much money we spent (knowing the total for sure would probably be a painful thing), though I estimate we spent between $700 and $1,200 total on it.
I feel we could have done better on many areas (the backpack in particular) than we did, however we were running out of time and had to settle for what we could pull off. Also, transporting this thing anywhere is a logistics nightmare. The chest armor and the backpack sections are large, and the rest fit into several large boxes. So any time we want to take the costume anywhere requires use of my mom's minivan and several friends willing to help lug it to and from the car!
Random facts: When Master Zero is wearing the costume, he stands a whopping 7 feet, 4 inches from the Gundam's feet to the top of the v-fins on the helmet. I jokingly refer to the costume at times as a "1:9 scale model"

Photo taken by.... crap, I forget who. One of our friends.
That one is actually God Gundam (Burning Gundam in the English dub,) but it is basically a more powerful version of Shining Gundam.
And it's hard... and expensive! Not sure which was hurting worse when all was said and done: my wallet or my friend's feet! (The feet of the Gundam costume are basically a set of 7 inch tall platforms! Not easy to walk in at all!)
Yeah, it's pretty unwieldy and stuffy to wear, and a real pain to transport, even when completely dismantled. There was a lot of stuff I wanted to do differently, but unfortunately we kinda ran out of time and money and just had to do what we could.
